David Allen Hubbard was born in 1955 and grew up on a small farm in Napa, California. Knowing there would not be money for college, he became a three-sport athlete, hoping to get a scholarship. By his senior year of high school, he was offered four full scholarships to play football: Arizona State, Nebraska, Oregon, and Brigham Young University.
Though not a Mormon, Dave chose BYU, majoring in Sociology and minoring in Child Development and Family Relations. He believed God was ultimately directing him to full-time ministry working with youth. At BYU, Dave was an All-American, playing in the Fiesta Bowl and the Senior Bowl.
In 1977, Dave was drafted by Hank Stram with the New Orleans Saints, where he played left tackle and blocked for Archie Manning. He also spent a brief time with the Denver Broncos. While in the NFL, he became a member of the Screen Actors Guild and had a one-time speaking role in a TV sitcom.
After a brief stint in the NFL, Dave stepped into full-time ministry as an associate pastor, working primarily with high school and college students in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was a frequent chapel speaker for the San Francisco Forty-niners, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland A’s. During this time, he began developing his speaking abilities, quickly becoming an in-demand speaker for conferences and retreats throughout the West Coast. He also served as an associate pastor in Estes Park, Colorado, and Portland, Oregon.
Dave went parachuting for the first time shortly after stepping out of the NFL. His main chute never opened. What should have taken three and a half minutes took less than 30 seconds. Though he finally pulled his reserve chute, he was only 200 feet off the ground, milliseconds from a fatal accident. Because of the high-impact landing, Dave suffered a serious back injury.
In 1989, Dave moved to Atlanta, Georgia, after developing a unique exercise method that put no compression on the spine, for which he later was awarded a U.S. patent. There, he began traveling extensively, giving lectures and presentations on his new formula for fitness. He also developed a presentation exclusively for churches called Fit for the Master’s Use – physical fitness from a biblical perspective. During the early 90s, Dave did seminars at most of the larger churches in Greater Atlanta.
In 1992, Dave was approached by Trillium Health Products and Salton to feature his patented fitness program in infomercials and on QVC. After the intensity of a year of filming and performing, he decided to take a break from speaking. He then got involved in several entrepreneurial start-up companies from 2000-2006, involving new technology that helped medical practices go from paper to digital records. Those years brought new insights into the complexities of what it takes to turn an idea into a product, acquire sufficient funding, and develop a company.
In 2007, Dave decided to return to his passion—speaking. He rebranded as America’s Fitness Coach® and began giving fitness presentations to companies and organizations, which he continues to do today.
In 2013, Dave was asked to join the staff of The Church of The Apostles in Atlanta as the pastor of the 20s and 30s ministry. In 2017, he moved to the church’s worldwide media ministry, Leading The Way, to manage ministry relations.
In 2018, Dave was hired by Cumberland Christian School to head the Bible Department. He taught Bible classes for four years.
In 2022, Dave came back on staff at The Church of The Apostles, where he currently serves, working with Small Groups, Local Area Ministries, and Young Adults.
Dave lives in Marietta, Georgia, with his wife, Melinda. They have two adult children and three grandchildren.
